
Putting Infrared Heaters in the Bathroom Without Burning the House Down
Let’s be real: bathrooms are the worst place for electronics. Between the steam from a hot shower and the occasional splash of water, it’s a recipe for disaster. If you just throw a standard heater in there, you’re basically asking for a short circuit. To keep things safe, we focus on two main things: keeping the electricity where it belongs and sealing the box tight.
Stopping the Leaks
Water loves to bridge the gap between live wires and the metal frame of a heater. That’s a bad combination. To stop that from happening, we use high-grade ceramic insulators at the lamp terminals. These things are great because they don’t care if they’re soaked—they keep the current locked down. And the wiring? We stick with silicone-based insulation. Most wires crack after they get hot and cold a few dozen times, and that’s when moisture sneaks into the copper core. Silicone doesn’t do that. It stays flexible. One more thing: keep an eye on the leakage current. In a damp room, if you leak more than 0.75mA, your GFCI is going to trip. It’s annoying to keep resetting your breaker, so we keep the parasitic capacitance low to stop those “nuisance trips.”
The Seal Deal
A heater is only as safe as the box it’s in. We use IP65-rated housings. In plain English, that means it’s dust-tight and can handle water jets hitting it from any direction. But here is where people usually mess up: the cable entry points. If you use a cheap plastic gland, the heat will warp it, and steam will leak right in. We don’t risk it. We use nickel-plated brass or high-temp polymers that actually hold their shape.
The Great Heat Struggle
Here’s the catch. When you seal a high-wattage lamp in a waterproof box, you’re basically creating a little oven. The air inside gets incredibly hot. You can’t just plug it in and walk away. You need a housing that has a thermal relief valve or a chassis that acts as a heat sink. If the inside gets too toasted, you’ll melt your own wiring insulation—which completely ruins the point of having a waterproof seal in the first place. For a bit of extra peace of mind, wire the whole thing through a dedicated RCD. It’s the final safety net that lets you actually relax in your warm bathroom.
