
Getting Your SACMI Rotary Heaters Up to Speed
If you’re running SACMI rotary blow molding machines, you know they move fast. Like, really fast. There’s no room for lagging. If your heating lamps take too long to hit that sweet spot, your PET preforms won’t be pliable enough, and you’re just wasting precious cycle time. That’s exactly why we built our heater bulbs the way we did. They’re made for those rapid-fire thermal cycles. The secret is in the heat. To kill that annoying start-up lag, we focused on the power-to-mass ratio of the filament. We use high-wattage shortwave infrared tech, which is a fancy way of saying the lamps shoot energy straight into the PET instead of just warming up the air around it. It hits peak temperature in seconds. If you go with a high-voltage setup, the heat flux is even denser. That’s what keeps your BPM pinned to the max. Built to take a beating Rapid heating and cooling is brutal on equipment. It’s a constant cycle of expanding and contracting. To stop the bulbs from just burning out, we use heavy-wall quartz glass. It’s tough. We also obsess over the fit. Whether you’re using R7s or Sk15 connectors, the fit has to be tight. Why? Because a loose connection creates resistance. That leads to hot spots and fried sockets. We keep the tolerances tight so you can just drop these into your SACMI oven arrays and get back to work. A few things to watch out for Now, here’s the trade-off. When you run these lamps at full tilt to get that instant response, the inside of the oven gets hot—fast. You’ve got to make sure your cooling blowers are dialed in. If the airflow is off, you’ll end up with “pearlescence” or, even worse, scorched plastic. It ruins the look of the bottle instantly. One last tip: check your reflector alignment every single shift. You want that infrared energy hitting the preform, not baking your machine frame.
